Fall 2022 Natural Wine Salons
A handy calendar of international natural wine tastings for Fall 2022. And a few recent appearances on podcasts! (A new medium, for me.)
Blame my masochistic travel schedule for the belated arrival of this round-up of upcoming Fall 2022 natural wine salons.
Until mid-November I’m engaged in a marathon book tour of the destination natural wine establishments of America (and parts of Canada), in efforts to ensure that my natural wine book finds its intended audience. Unfortunately this means that I’ll miss a few highly anticipated tastings listed here, notably Brut(es) in Mulhouse (the splendid 2021 event is pictured above).
There are some upsides. As long as copies of my book get delivered in time, I’ll be appearing at my friend Marko Kovac’s marvelous Karakterre salon, which will be held in New York City for the first time on November 5th. I’ll be the guy standing near a pile of books, looking sheepish, apologizing to every Austrian vigneron for the somewhat cursory coverage of the Austrian natural wine scene in The World of Natural Wine.1
As ever, the natural wine tastings listed below are just the ones I have on my own radar this season. It covers the months of October, November, and December 2022. (Events organizers: if I’ve left your event out, or gotten anything wrong, please get in touch!)
As a little bonus, here are my first-ever and second-ever podcast appearances, for anyone interested in hearing me stumble over my complicated feelings about natural wine culture in real-time:
On October 13th, I sat down in a booth at FRENCHETTE with GRAPE NATION’s genial host SAM BENRUBI to chat about THE WORLD OF NATURAL WINE. Towards the end of the episode I totally fail a blind-taste of a wine I should know well. Listen here.
On October 14th, I joined dashing DISGORGEOUS co-host JOHN MCCARROLL and our friend the veteran NYC sommelière (and Coeur Wine portfolio manager) AMANDA SMELTZ to chat about a subject close to all of our hearts: the Beaujolais. And why chardonnay should be uprooted there. Listen here.
I’ll be in touch again soon with new adventures in the Languedoc and, surely, the USA. If you happen to find yourself in Austin, Houston, San Francisco, Oaklands, Sonoma, Santa Cruz, Portland, Seattle, or Chicago in the weeks to come, please do drop by one of the book release events! There is usually good wine on hand.
Many thanks for reading, as always ! Enjoy the start of scarf season, unless you are the sort of “stylish” Frenchman for whom it is always scarf season, no matter the weather.

More to come, surely. Please check back on this post on the NOT DRINKING POISON Substack for future updates.
I’m particularly abashed about not having had the chance to include any text on Ewald Tscheppe of Werlitsch, whose pure, long-fermented wines really captivate me these days.
