Winter 2024-2025 Natural Wine Salons
A calendar of upcoming natural wine salons for December 2024 and January - February 2025. Plus: La Cave du Centre, my new cave-à-manger in Burgundy.
Three months have passed since autumn began, which means its time for another formulaic but useful round-up of natural and natural-ish wine salons!
The calendar below covers December 2024, and January and February 2025. Much information is still to-be-confirmed; please check back on the Substack for updates. Organizers: if I’ve overlooked your event, please get in touch!
New and noteworthy salons this season include: Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Anthony Tortul’s Il Etait Une Fois… salon, a star-studded new event on the Loire calendar that goes head-to-head with Massimo Marchiori and Clovis Ochin’s returning Naturall salon on February 1st; a second edition of the cosy Zoom Sur Le Vin salon in Sète, organized by Clos Fantine and Mylène Bru; and a two-day edition of my friend Jan Culik’s Bottled Alive salon in the Czech Republic town of Tàbor, held in February rather than January this year. (Probably equally cold.)
For my part, I’ll be visiting the salons this season wearing a different hat: that of a small-town caviste. Back in September, I signed the lease on an inexpensive wine shop / wine bar space in the Saône-et-Loire town of Chagny, fifteen minutes’ drive south of Beaune. I finally managed to open the establishment last week. It’s called La Cave du Centre. It’s a one-man-show, or, more specifically, one man tripping over a small dog, as I attempt to plate simple dishes and serve wine at the same time. As luck would have it, the learning curve has been softened by a conspicuous lack of clientele so far. Chagny is, let’s say, not Beaune, not by a long shot.
But that’s what I signed on for. My plan is to resume devoting most of my attention to this newsletter once the nerve-frying and bank-emptying mania of restaurant opening subsides. La Cave du Centre might never rake in the euros, but it’ll serve as a pleasant office space, and a place to receive visitors, and perhaps host tastings and events in the future. To all my dear readers: whenever you find yourself in Burgundy, come say hi!
In the meantime, here’s a bonus report for subscribers:
An annotated PHOTO ESSAY about opening LA CAVE DU CENTRE in CHAGNY, offered with the caveat that the place has only been open a week and a half and will certainly continue to evolve.
Slated for release before too long: Part II of Issue II: Alsatian Inspiration. Another edition of DROPLETS, in which I will try to reckon with the psychic fall-out from the US election. And much, much more from Burgundy.
Santé!
